She even goes to the extent of acting out of what was normal for her gender. While Macbeth has two thoughts about the murder plot, Lady Macbeth would rather have ‘ dashed the brains out’ of her own child than go back on what he has ‘sworn’ upon. This contradicts to the actions of lady Macbeth after the tyranny that Macbeth causes. The crazy state of Lady Macbeth, which eventually caused her death, could have been non-existent if she hadn’t been the motivation and just as much the driving force behind her husband’s ruthless leadership. On the other hand, there are some characters that are also somewhat responsible for their lack of involvement, or failure to react quickly to the suspicious murder of King Duncan. These two characters are Banquo and Malcolm; although they are not directly involved in the cruel regime of Macbeth, they could have reacted quicker and they may have stopped many unfortunate events from occurring. Malcolm fleeing the country it fear of his life, takes the eye off Macbeth and immediately makes him a suspect. If he had stayed and put forth his suspicion of Macbeth, he may have stopped Macbeth from ever even becoming king and therefore taking away the likelihood of tyranny in the paly. More importantly, the way in which Banquo dealt with the issue, and his hesitation to reveal the prophecies of ‘weird women’ cause his own fatality. However, Banquo may feel his actions can be justified as he has also received prophecies that he ‘should be the root and father of many kings. This all goes back to the evil sisters and their prophecies, which started all of the tyranny. The three evil witches prophecies can be seen as the actual cause of the tyranny of Macbeth; as they are the ones who revealed that he ‘shall be king. ’ These prophecies caused the murder of Duncan, Banquo and eventually lead to Macbeths down fall. His thrive of becoming king and his confidence that he is going to live his full life all came from the three witches. These apparitions are what cause the ignorance of Macbeth. Making him feel invincible as ‘none of woman born can harm him. Although, the witches are to be held responsible for the revelations of the apparitions, it is the misinterpretation of these apparitions that leads Macbeth into having a selfish, unjust and ruthless reign as king. No one character can be blamed for the tyranny of Macbeth. As there were many who were directly or indirectly involved with the cruelty of Macbeth. The close relationship between Macbeth and lady Macbeth, and the ‘unsex[ed]’ Lady Macbeth successfully convinces Macbeth into killing Duncan, starting the tyranny. But, the real start of the tyranny is the apparitions and prophecies given to both Banquo and Macbeth. Introduction Unocal Oil Company of California or Unocal was established in 1890. Its main business was to develop oil fields around Los Angeles and other parts of California. This was not only a challenge but also an opportunity for Unocal as most of the oil fields in the United States nearing depletion. However, to clear land with a cheap labor force the Burmese army continually forced them to relocate to different places, work in harsh conditions and cruelly repressed them if they had any intention against this project (Velasquez, 2006, p. 20). The Karen had to work like slaves. They were brutalized and forced to build roads, housing camps, and other infrastructures. For Unocal, trying to neglect and ignore what happened in Burma was not a very responsible action. In 1995 in a meeting with activists Unocal president John Imle said, If you threaten the pipeline, theres going to be more military. If forced labor goes hand in glove with militar y, yes, there will be more forced labor. For every threat to the pipeline there will be a reaction. Therefore, there was a huge conflict between the local people and Unocal. This brought to an inevitable lawsuit that the corporation had to face. According to the article, Burmese villagers face Unocal in US court, Bangkok Post, published on 28/09/2002, we could see that: The defendant, Unocal, is based in the US, while the events in question took place in Burma. Because of US legal doctrine, it has been very difficult to bring cases from other countries to US courts, even when US defendants are central to the case. In summary, if the plaintiffs eleven anonymous Burmese villagers won this case, this would create a legal action brought under a law allowing foreigners to sue US companies for abuses overseas. On the contrary, if Unocal won this case, it would create a prototype for different American corporations in directing the operation and development process. Solutions Whether Unocal knew the brutal actions of their partner or not, they still had to be responsible for the ill-treated behaviors towards the Karen in Burma. What should Unocal do to force the human and property rights in Burma without sacrificing its benefits? The Burmese Government had its own way of governing; hence, interfering in the political institution was not a good strategy. The responsibility of Unocal was making a profit associated with social benefits. Hence, at first, Unocal should negotiate with the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) to find the peaceful ways of protecting the pipelines. Instead of using the army they should be able to hire the minority groups themselves to secure the pipeline. Unocal and their partners should pay fair wages directly to the villagers. They should offer them an amount of compensation to help them relocate as well. All of those activities would save the reputation and image of the company. In addition, Unocal itself could offer free medical services, education or agriculture assistance. This will help the local villagers stand behind Unocal, supporting them in future, and especially avoiding the lawsuits of human abuse. Nevertheless they had known what the military did with the minority people; they kept neglecting how Burmese Government treated the local people. Sadly, they had no action on this issue. In a landmark decision that reversed the trial courts decision that plaintiffs had to show that Unocal also wanted the military to commit those abuses, a federal appeals court ruled in 2002 that plaintiffs needed only to demonstrate that Unocal knowingly assisted the military in perpetrating the abuses, and that plaintiffs had presented enough evidence to that effect so the case should go to trial. (Lobe, 2004) As a result, in December, the Supreme Court had used this ATCA to against Unocal Company. Unocal agreed to pay the villagers a sum in the tens of millions† (Kurlantzick, 2005). What we could learn from this lesson? According to utilitarian, this compensation was not so worthy compared to the benefit they had earned from this project. The benefit they earned could contribute a lot for American society in general and the government in particular. However, they violated the rights and justice of the Burmese. Instead of preventing the abuses in Burma, they passed over, putting all the responsibility onto the Burmese Government. This cannot be considered an ethical action. If Unocal took care of the local villagers, built schools for them, provided free medical services, and treated the local people fairly, the cost that Unocal had to compensate would be lesser than 10 million dollars. Unocal also would not need to spend more time to take care of those victims, nor more money to pay for the lawyers. Their reputation and their brand name would not need to be rebuilt. Automatically, everyone would recognize Unocal as a trustworthy brand name on market. It would be a good way of PR in this competitive environment. Conclusion Despite the risk and ethical problems relating to the project in Burma, Unocal kept investing in Burma and neglecting the human rights abuses of Burmese Government (Manuel, 2006, p. 120). Our first sights of scene two are the iron hedgehogs. The camera then cuts to the soldiers on a small boat, travelling to Omaha Beach. We see Captain Millers hands shaking as he gets his drink from his pocket. We witness soldiers being sick. A man shouts Thirty Seconds. Soldiers start completing rituals and kissing crosses. The hatch comes down and then the Germans open fire. Lots of Americans are killed instantly. Soldiers jump into the water but they are shot there, one soldier drowns as the string off his bag strangles him. The camera bobs on the water, as if we were there. We then follow Captain Miller up the shore. We hear bullets whistle across the air. The camera then goes to the Germans viewpoint. The handheld camera comes into effect and follows Miller across the beach. The sound mutes and its as if we can hear his heartbeat. A man is looking around for his arm. This is shocking because his arm is missing and its realistic because when he finds it, it looks real. The hand held camera and the muted sound then comes back into effect. Miller is gathering with his unit behind a sand bank. This scene makes the audience want to watch on. As the audience, I was shocked that the soldiers would go through that for their country. First of all we hear miller shouting call the search party where they are. The handheld camera is still in use. Soldiers try to stop a man from dieing but he then gets shot in the head. This rages a soldier and he then starts verbally threatening the Germans even through they cant hear him. The whistling bullets play a big part in this scene because theyre always being fired. Soldiers start to put together a pipe bomb. The camera cuts to a man shot on the helmet. For some reason he takes off his helmet and gets shot in the head. This is really effective because its just minor things like that that can cause deaths. The camera then goes back to the soldiers on the sand bank. They light the pipe bomb and throw it behind the sand bank. It explodes sending debris high up into the air. This must confuse the Germans as the soldiers run for better cover. This scene effects the audience differently than scene two because there arent as many deaths. This scene starts off with captain miller getting a mirror from his pocket a knife from another soldier and chewing gum from another. He sticks the mirror to the knife and looks round the corner. He points out a couple of enemy soldiers in the mirror. Soldiers begin to move in and shoot the Germans. He then calls in his best gunman, and shoots and shoots one man. Then he repeats this and takes out the other soldier. Miller confirms that the area is clear. They move on up the hill. The camera cuts to soldiers running up the beach. Soldiers then shoot at enemy soldiers trying to run. Eventually American soldiers find a small base and raid it. Then they burn it so all soldiers run out and crawl to their death. All of a sudden soldiers start to surrender and start to run away. Then a soldier played by Vin Diesel finds a knife. He gives it to a soldier and starts to get emotional. The camera cuts to soldiers lying dead on the beach. This scene effects the audience differently than all scenes because the Americans are fighting back. At the beginning of the film, at Colleville Sur Mer I thought it was going to be a boring film but when I carried on watching it I got into it. The opening battle scene is really shocking. I knew that it was going to be violent from what I already know. When James Ryan is walking through the gravestones he is really upset. If I was there I would have been sad because thousands of people died but I wasnt alive then so, I wouldnt be really upset. The opening battle scenes are shocking because stuff like this really did happen and this many people really did die. The scenes were realistic all because of the special effects. The gunfire whistling, the bombs booming and the make up looks realistic.
